Dr. RxSonic:

Promotional Material and Album Covers

Sugar-Coated Musications Album Cover

When Dr. RxSonic asked me to design the art for his sophomore album release, I took into consideration both his previous album’s art and the theme of his current project. The design of his first album, prn Musications, established several identifying characteristics: a white and orange colour palette, the “Dr. RxSonic” logo that combines a music note with the “psy” symbol, and creative methods of physical distribution (the album was released in a pill-shaped USB stick contained in a prescription pill container). Sugar-Coated Musications takes a step away from the pharmaceutical theme of its predecessor, with each piece of Slavic electronica being named after some food or treat.

To maintain visual consistency throughout Dr. RxSonic’s discography but also reflect the candy theme of this release, I separated the note-psy logo from its cursive type for cleanliness, maintained the pill bottle in photographic form, and added a burst of colour into the orange/white palette. Because the album was to be released digitally and physically on a USB “card”, both square and landscape layouts were made to accommodate all formats.

Dr. RxSonic’s live performances are a kaleidoscope of instruments and media. A multi-instrumentalist, Dr. RxSonic switches effortlessly from his signature Chapman Stick to keys, and then over to a theremin. While all this happens, he projects various videos of his own design alongside a number of light machines. More than just a musician, Dr. RxSonic is a showman with a keen eye for memorability: his projections are foreign, his instruments are rare, and his musicianship is great. Photographically, I wanted to relay the sensory panoply of a Dr. RxSonic performance. To achieve this, I utilized various prisms to direct the many lights and projections into the lens while still focussing on Dr. RxSonic himself — a process that allows a single image to contain the three-dimensional space of the stage.
